Overweight and Obesity in America

Americans have a better modern life compared with many other countries in the world. In one side this is very good for the welfare of society. But on the other hand there is also a negative impact. In terms of health services even better. But, unfortunately there are still unhealthy behaviors in the community, mainly related to body weight.

The death rate in the United States recorded the highest compared to 12 other developed countries, such as Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the UK.

For comparison, the life expectancy of men in the United States an average of 76 years. Lower than male life expectancy in the 12 developed countries that can live up to 78 years. For women, life expectancy is higher, with an average of 81 years. However, the figure is still lower than the life expectancy in the 12 developed countries that reach 83 years.

Being overweight carries its own risks for increased potential degenerative diseases. Some diseases that increase the potential occurrence with increases in weight are heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, hyper cholesterol, stroke, liver disease and bile gland, problems sleeping, respiratory disorders, calcification of joints, infertility women, and some cancers.

Overweight and obesity generally has the possibility of a shorter life than the has the ideal body weight. And the health overweight was lower. In America, nearly one-third of the population experiencing overweight, even obese. And this does not just happen in adults, but also children and adolescents.

Compared to three decades ago, there 3-fold increase. In children and adolescents, in addition to increased risk factors for the disease above, obesity is also effect on mental development and social development. They often suffer discrimination in the association, not confident, and feel embarrassed. If not immediately addressed will pose a greater danger.

Defining Adult Overweight and Obesity
Adult Body Mass Index (BMI)
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a person's weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters. A high BMI can be an indicator of high body fatness.  BMI can be used as a screening tool but is not diagnostic of the body fatness or health of an individual.

To calculate BMI, see the BMI Calculator or determine BMI by finding your height and weight in this BMI Index Chart.

If your BMI is less than 18.5, it falls within the underweight range.
If your BMI is 18.5 to 24.9, it falls within the normal or healthy weight range.
If your BMI is 25.0 to 29.9, it falls within the overweight range.
If your BMI is 30.0 or higher, it falls within the obese range.

Note: At an individual level, BMI can be used as a screening tool but is not diagnostic of the body fatness or the health of an individual. A trained healthcare provider should perform appropriate health assessments in order to evaluate an individual's health status and risks.

BMI does not measure body fat directly, but research has shown that BMI is moderately correlated with more direct measures of body fat obtained from skinfold thickness measurements, bioelectrical impedance, densitometry (underwater weighing), dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and other methods.  Furthermore, BMI appears to be strongly correlated with various metabolic and disease outcome consistent with these more direct measures of body fatness.
